17% drop in rough sleepers compared to the previous year

The internet was divided by a striking photo of a homeless person sleeping in a park near Sydney Harbour.

Maintenance staff mowed the grass around them instead of disturbing them.

The image in First Fleet Park prompted debate over whether the workers had been lazy or courteous.

While some criticised the staff for not fulfilling their duties, others praised them for not disturbing the homeless individual and for the good condition of the park.

The City of Sydney Council said last year’s street count had revealed a 17% drop in rough sleepers compared to the previous year.
