Zambia probes women’s football abuse claims

Lusaka — Friday, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) opened an investigation into claims of sexual assault in women’s football.

Social media posts imply that several players were selected for the national squad after allegedly being asked to provide favors to anonymous football organization executives.

Adrian Kashala, the federation’s secretary general, stated in a statement, “Although the FAZ has no record of any official complaints about the accusations, we consider them to be extremely serious and have launched an investigation into the matter.”

“We will work with the Zambian police and other interested parties to address this issue,” he added.

Anyone with information on sexual abuse among “Shepolopolo” national team members was asked to report it to the association.

“Since then, we have sent a letter to the Zambian police inviting anyone with evidence to assist with the inquiry. The nation will be informed of the results of the investigations after they have been concluded. We will provide no additional comment until then “Kashala said.

Zambia reached the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations for women in July and created history this month by winning the COSAFA Women’s Championship.

Africa has qualified Zambia, South Africa, Morocco, and Nigeria for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
