Before her 79-year-old lawyer husband shot and killed 21-year-old singer Yrma Lydya in a Mexico City restaurant, she had been trying to file for divorce for two months.

When Jess Hernández shot Lydya last Thursday, she was seated at Suntory, a Japanese eatery in the Benito Juárez area of the Mexican capital.

Hernández and his bodyguard Benjamin Hernández were apprehended at the eatery as they made an escape attempt.

According to reports, Jess Hernández attempted to buy his release from police officers who had arrested him.

According to the Mexican newspaper Excelsior, the folk music performer inquired about starting a divorce in April after a succession of domestic violence events and provided photographs of her damaged face as proof.

Lydya reported Hernández’s assault on her to the police in December 2021. On another occasion, he had threatened her with a gun.

Despite the violent incidents, Lydya made the choice to try again with her husband.

It is unknown how long Lydya and Jess Hernandez were married.

Omar Garca Harfuch, the head of security in Mexico City, revealed to Milenio news network that Jess Hernández met with two individuals at the restaurant on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Before Lydya showed up, they left the restaurant at about 6 o’clock.

A witness claimed to Primer Impacto of Univision that Jess Hernandez shot Lydya at point blank range. His wife was hit in the head by the third shot he fired.

When the person needed assistance, a police officer who was present at the restaurant was able to detain the lawyer.

On Saturday, Lydya is slated to take the stage for a concert in Glendale, California.

Grandiosas 12, a run of performances in Mexico and the US including well-known singers from Central and South America, included the performance.

When Jess and Benjamin Hernández appeared in court for the first time on Sunday, the judge ordered that they be placed in pretrial detention at a prison in Mexico City while the investigation is ongoing. At the hearing, the judge denied Jess Hernández’s motion for house confinement due to his advanced age.

He asserted his innocence and assured the jury that Lydya was not murdered.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
