A group of US lawmakers is currently in Taiwan on a five-day visit, meeting with local officials and business executives. The delegation is composed of Democratic Representatives Ro Khanna of California, Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts, and Jonathan Jackson of Illinois, along with Republican Tony Gonzales of Texas.

They are expected to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and members of the legislature. Beijing, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway territory, opposes any exchanges between Taiwan and foreign governments.

China has increased pressure on Taiwan and regularly conducted military exercises in the region. During their visit, the US delegation said their efforts to come were not provocative of China but consistent with President Biden’s foreign policy.

China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, said over the weekend that Taiwan “has never been a country and it will not be a country in the future.” You Si-kun, the head of Taiwan’s legislature, responded by saying that Taiwan has already become an independent sovereign nation and has never been ruled by the People’s Republic of China for a single day.
