UK Follows US, Canada, and EU in Banning TikTok from Government Phones

Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden has announced that the Chinese-owned video app TikTok will be banned from UK government phones due to security concerns.

Mr Dowden stated that there is a potential risk to government data and information being used by the app, even though its use is limited.

He also highlighted that banning TikTok is a good cyber “hygiene” practice and aligns with similar measures taken by the US, Canada, and the EU.

The security and data privacy of the video-sharing app have been under increasing scrutiny, with concerns that it could be used to promote pro-Beijing views or collect user data.

TikTok, however, strongly denies these allegations.

Labour has criticized Mr Dowden for delaying the implementation of the ban, stating that he is “closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.”

Despite this, the UK government’s decision to ban TikTok from government phones has been made to ensure the security and protection of sensitive government data and information.
