At UFC 283, former UFC strawweight champion Jessica Andrade disfigured the face of women’s flyweight Lauren Murphy, leaving the UFC community in shock.
The battle was virtually as one-sided as it could have been, with Andrade winning by scores of 30-25 on two judges’ cards and 30-26 on the other.
It indicates that on two cards, two of the judges deemed the second and third rounds to be so skewed in Andrade’s favor that she won the rounds 10-8.
Former champion Daniel Cormier declared at the end of the second round, “I’m not sure if I’d stop this fight.”
Jon Anik said, “What are we hoping to achieve by going five more minutes?”
Cormier thought that two 10-8 rounds had already occurred, with only the third round remaining — the only unanimous 10-8 round on the scorecards — remaining.
Cormier stated that with more than two minutes remaining in the third round, Murphy was not even seeing the punches.
“The referee must intervene. He looks like he wants to, just do it guy,” Cormier remarked.
One minute later, in the midst of a flurry of powerful shots, Anik said, “(Referee) Osiris Maia might want to step in.”
However, he will not,” Cormier stated. “I’m sitting next to Mick Maynard (UFC matchmaker) and Mick is asking what he needs to see. This conflict could have been ended long ago.”
At the conclusion of the battle, Cormier remarked, “This is so difficult to watch.”
At the conclusion of the battle, Andrade appeared healthy whereas Murphy was disfigured. It was devastation that not even UFC fighters wanted to see.
Tanner Boser, a UFC heavyweight, tweeted, “That was f*cked. Andrade is a monster, and Lauren Murphy is one of the hardest people alive, making this situation much more difficult.”
Cub Swanson, a bantamweight, said, “Major props to Lauren Murphy for finishing that fight, but her corner should have thrown in the towel.”
