Tributes pour in for EastEnders and Desmond’s star Mona Hammond who died aged 91

Actress Mona Hammond passed away at the age of 91. Tributes are flooding in for the “trailblazer” star.

The BBC’s EastEnders character Blossom Jackson was the one for which the Jamaican-British actress was most recognized. Early in the 1990s, she played Susu in Desmond’s.

‘It is with regret that I wake up to the news that Mona Hammond has passed away,’ Marcus Ryder said on Twitter in his condolences.

‘Among her numerous achievements she co-founded Talawa Theatre Company in 1985. She was also a graduate and received an honorary RADA Fellowship in 2019.’

Loose Women presenter Charlene White described the actress as a ‘trailblazer in every way’ in a tribute.

An EastEnders fan site tweeted this morning: ‘RIP Mona Hammond, who played Blossom Jackson in #EastEnders.

‘Really sad to hear of Mona Hammond passing. Blossom was a great character during the early years of #EastEnders and was a great family figure for the Jackson family in their early days. R.I.P.’

Blossom Jackson, who she portrayed in Albert Square, was a significant member of the Jackson clan.

She started in 1994 and worked there till 1997. Then, in 2010, she made a comeback for two episodes starring Blossom.

She had previously played Michelle Fowler’s midwife in the BBC soap opera in 1986. This was her second appearance in the series.

Mona started her acting career on the stage, where she performed in plays including Macbeth and Josephine House and spent two years with the Royal National Theatre’s performances of The Crucible, Peer Gynt, and Fuente Ovejuna.

Before switching to EastEnders, she first worked on the television shows The Sweeney, Juliet Bravo, and Coronation Street.

She appeared in Holby City as well.

She originated the character of Susu in Desmond’s cast and reprised it in the Porkpie spin-off of the series.

On BBC’s The Archers, the late celebrity played Mabel Thompson, which was broadcast on television.
