Wednesday, the Gauteng Department of Health reported the detection of a third case of cholera in Johannesburg.
However, the most recent patient is the husband of the first confirmed case.
“He appeared with symptoms at a health facility on Saturday and was admitted immediately for additional testing. The patient’s condition is steady.”
The department restated its recommendation that anyone with mild to severe, watery diarrhoea and dehydration visit the nearest health facility.
The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the National Department of Health have intensified their collaboration in monitoring cholera cases, and outbreak response teams have been activated.
In Johannesburg, previous cases were reported on February 1 and 3, 2023.
