Music fans have expressed outrage over the excessive fees charged by Ticketmaster for The Cure’s US tour.
The band’s frontman, Robert Smith, called out the ticketing giant on Twitter and managed to secure refunds for fans who had already purchased tickets.
The Cure had intended to keep ticket prices reasonable, but fans complained that the exorbitant fees made the tickets unaffordable.
Robert Smith took to Twitter to express his frustration and inform fans that he would be contacting Ticketmaster to address the issue.
He later tweeted that he had secured $10 refunds for fans who bought the cheapest tickets and $5 for everyone else. Fans appreciated the move, but many continue to criticize Ticketmaster for its “predatory” behavior and “greed.”
Other musicians, such as Tim Burgess from The Charlatans, have also voiced their concerns about the broken ticketing system.
High booking fees have long been a problem for music fans, and many are praising Smith for taking action against Ticketmaster.
Nigel Carr, editor at Louder Than War, hopes that more bands will follow Smith’s example and campaign against excessive fees.
He encourages fans to use social media to expose and challenge these fees, as simply emailing Ticketmaster is unlikely to have an impact.
The Cure’s Shows of a Lost World North American tour begins in May, and issues with ticket sales first surfaced when fans shared screenshots of their Ticketmaster purchases.
In some cases, fans paid more than double the face value of the tickets due to various fees and charges.
Smith condemned the fees in a series of tweets and later announced that Ticketmaster had agreed to issue refunds as a “gesture of goodwill.
” The company has faced backlash in the past for similar issues, and has even been questioned by US senators for monopolizing the ticket sale market and pricing children out of concerts.
Ticketmaster has yet to comment on the situation.
