Terry Pheto and Lerato Mvelase join ‘King Shaka’

Local actors keep joining the set of the Showtime drama series “King Shaka.”

Terry Pheto, a renowned South African actress, producer, casting director, and entrepreneur, has been named as the newest actor to join the drama series.

Shaka is portrayed by British actor Charles Babalola in the Showtime series, which is executive produced by Antoine Fuqua and written by Olu Odebunmi and Tolu Awosika.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (of “Oz,” “The Bourne Identity,” and “Game of Thrones” fame) will portray Zwide, while Pheto will play Juma, Zwide’s wife.

The “Tsotsi” actress said on social media that she was honoured to be a part of the “important narrative and wonderful cast.”

Pheto returns to acting after spending time in front of the camera as a producer and casting director for Netflix movies including “Savage Beauty” and “The Brave Ones,” which debuts on September 16.

Actress Lerato Mvelase, who is also from South Africa, enthusiastically announced the news on social media. Mvelase will play Mkabayi, the father of Shaka’s eldest sister and the most powerful person in the royal court.

The actress wrote, “God’s timing is the main element of the process. The morning cock crows. A lovely morning it is.

Fans and backers of the film industry cheered when they heard that the Mzansi stars had been cast in the foreign project.

The part of Nandi, Shaka’s dedicated mother who would do everything to fulfil her son’s destiny, will be played by Senegalese actress Assa Maga.

Thapelo Mokoena, Warren Masemola, and Thando Dlomo were already cast in the new drama series in an announcement made in August.

According to Deadline, filming on the show would start in September in KwaZulu-Natal and take place fully in Mzansi for its Showtime premiere in 2023.
