Steve Irwin should replace Prince Charles on Australian currency

In the wake of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Australians are demanding for the late national icon Steve Irwin to replace King Charles III on the $5 bill.

On Thursday, Her Royal Highness passed away at the age of 96, prompting a global outpouring of grief as Commonwealth nations pay tribute to Britain’s longest reigning queen.

Her death after 70 years on the throne ushers in a slew of changes in Australia, including the introduction of bank notes and coins carrying the face of the new king. Some Aussies want Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin to be inscribed on the $5 note instead of the new king. Some Australians, however, have gathered online to demand that other notable Australians be immortalized on the country’s legal cash when the printing press begins.

I think it’s time to replace Queen Elizabeth’s face on currency with Steve Irwin or Heath Ledger, tweeted one woman.

As King Charles III ascends to the throne, he will be depicted on the Australian $5 bill and on the nation’s coinage.

Can we start a campaign to have Steve Irwin’s face replace the queen’s on currency? asked another. It is what we all desire.

Someone person added, “Steve Irwin deserves our finest kind of currency.”

“The value of the $5 bill will skyrocket if we put his image on it,”

However, other Australians have proposed alternatives, ranging from fictitious characters to indigenous creatures and even traditional dishes.

In a Reddit post titled “RIP Queen Betty,” a man invited his fellow Australians to nominate candidates to replace her Majesty on the $5 bill, eliciting a deluge of responses.

‘Alright…. Now for the essentials,’ he replied.

Who are we going to wager all our money on? Because I cannot find Charles there.

Perhaps Steve Irwin and Russell Coight? Give us some suggestions.

One social media user proposed the popular Australian sitcom characters Kath & Kim, while another argued for former Neighbours actor Alf Stewart.

Another suggested it be engraved with an Ibis, a local bird known in popular culture as a “bin chicken” due to its propensity to scavenge through waste in urbanized areas as a result of the loss of its natural habitat along wetlands.

Given the cultural tradition of Straya taking the piss out of itself, I wholeheartedly support placing bin chickens on currency.

Someone else suggested comedian Hamish Blake, while somebody else suggested television personality Daryl Sommers.

Other proposals were ‘pavlova,’ ‘lamington,’ ‘Bunnings snag,’ and the’maroons jersey’ from the State of Origin.

As soon as King Charles III ascends to the throne, the Royal Australian Mint will begin minting new coins with his image.

Note Printing Australia Limited, headquartered in Craigieburn, Victoria, and a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Australia responsible for producing the nation’s currency, will execute the same procedure for the $5 bill.

The new currency will be manufactured and circulated, while the old currency with the Queen’s portrait would remain legal tender but be gradually phased out.The Reserve Bank of Australia has confirmed King Charles III is expected to feature on a new $5 note but said Queen Elizabeth II bank notes will not be withdrawn

It is not the first time that Australians have requested that Steve Irwin be immortalized on the nation’s money.

Six years ago, supporters filed a failed Change.org petition to include the Crocodile Hunter on Australian banknotes. The campaign gathered 31,020 signatures.
