South African pensioner stabbed to death in robbery gone wrong

In the early hours of Thursday, February 3rd, the Free State police discovered an elderly man lying dead in the street.
Officers were alerted by members of the Manyatseng community that the senior had been stabbed by two suspects.
Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province, said members of the Ladybrand police station were on patrol in Manyatseng Township when they discovered the deceased pensioner. He was stabbed numerous times.

“It is alleged that on 3 February 2022 at about 04:30 the police were busy conducting crime prevention duties when they received a complaint of an unknown person found lying dead in the street of Matleleng,” said Mophiring.

The man, who was 60 years old, was stabbed in the neck and back. When the officers inquired with the community, they learned that the pensioner had been stabbed during an attempted robbery.
Two individuals were tracked down and apprehended in the Metampelong portion of the municipality, according to the police report.
The two men, aged 24 and 28, were apprehended with a lawn cutter and a knife. The weapons were taken away.
On Friday, February 4th, the suspects are scheduled to appear in the Ladybrand Magistrate’s Court on charges linked to the suspected murder of the elderly.
