South African Guinness World Record holder attempts back-to-back new records

While cold water swimming and ice dives have recently become popular fitness trends, 50-year-old South African Amber Fillary is taking things to a whole new level.

Amber, the current holder of the Guinness World Record for the longest swim under ice on a single breath while wearing only a bikini and goggles (90 meters), which she achieved in March 2022 in Norway, has set her eyes on two new Guinness World Records this year.

Fillary will be in Norway on March 4 to not only attempt to break her existing record by swimming more than 110 meters on a single breath, but also to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest swim under ice on a single breath while utilizing a mono fin.

Fillary stated, “I am ecstatic to be diving under the ice again this year; it is truly my happy place.”

“These two record attempts are simultaneously thrilling and terrifying. It will be challenging to enter the freezing water twice in one day to perform two breath holds, but I’m not getting any younger and want to give it my best!”

In November of last year, Fillary returned to the 91.44-meter Tooting Bec Lido, one of the oldest outdoor swimming pools in the United Kingdom, where she set a new record by swimming the length of the pool and a few more meters – 104.8 meters, to be exact – on a single breath.

“It was such an honor to be able to return to where it all began and use the swim as training for the new attempts,” said Fillary.

Although the water had not yet frozen, it was below 10 degrees, making it ideal for training.

The purpose of Fillary’s record attempts is to bring attention to the Mental Health Issues that plague so many individuals around the world, especially after the global epidemic.

Fillary’s advice to individuals she interacts with as a recovering addict and eating disorder survivor is to not let sadness and addiction prevent you from achieving great things and living your dream.
