On Wednesday, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) had his personal Twitter account, @BasedMikeLee, suspended after it was mistakenly flagged by the social media company as a fake account.

Lee stated that Twitter did not provide any explanation or alert him beforehand. Prior to the suspension, Lee had not posted any content that violated Twitter policies.

After the ban, Republican politicians on the platform quickly reached out to Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, asking for an explanation. Musk responded about two hours later, stating that Lee’s account had been incorrectly flagged as an impersonation account. Lee’s account was eventually reinstated, and he celebrated by posting a meme and thanking Elon Musk.

This incident occurred amidst accusations of censorship by conservatives on Twitter.

Twitter faced backlash when they barred distribution of The Post’s report on Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings in October 2020, claiming that the report violated its “hacked materials” policy without evidence.

Since Musk took over the company, he has allowed select journalists to view Twitter’s internal communications, revealing that dozens of FBI and government employees actively sought to censor users for their viewpoints, including for jokes and criticism of Democrats.

The “Twitter Files” also revealed that the company suppressed the tweets of right-wing commentators and anti-COVID lockdown advocates by “blacklisting” their accounts and limiting the visibility of their tweets.
