Senator Lidia Thorpe screamed against fossil fuels at Midwinter Ball

Sen. Lidia Thorpe of the controversial Green Party caused pandemonium on Wednesday night at the Midwinter Ball when she barged into the Marble Foyer of Parliament while flashing guests the middle finger.

Ms. Thorpe, one of the four Greens who were listed as guests for the dinner, raised her fist and screamed about “fossil idiots” before joining an outside demonstration.

During her wild stunt, the Greens senator wore blue jeans and an Aboriginal flag T-shirt. She afterwards attended an “Alternative Midwinter Ball” hosted by Extinction Rebellion on the grounds of the parliament.

Federal MPs attended the rally, which included “sorrowful” music and dancing black wraiths.

Later, Ms. Thorpe returned, yelling, “Criminals, stop killing the earth!”

Greens colleague Sarah Hanson-Young, who arrived wearing a long white dress with the phrase “End gas and coal” written on the back, supported Ms. Thorpe’s stunt.

The Greens senator’s act drew criticism from Senator Jacqui Lambie.

She may want to exercise some caution in the Senate since she has been pushing it so hard, particularly today with this stunt, the woman added.

Adam Bandt, a Greens MP, and his girlfriend Claudia Perkins also made headlines.

On Wednesday night, Ms. Perkins’ white outfit was covered in black and red writing that read “gas kills,” in addition to the phrase that had previously been shaved into her head: “coal kills.”

We wanted to convey this message to as many people as possible at once because Labor is looking into 114 new gas projects while we’re in the midst of a climate crisis, she said.

While Jordon Steele-John and Larissa Waters both announced they would not attend the event, Ms. Hanson-Young and Ms. Perkins exploited their participation in eye-catching costumes to make political comments.

No of who is in charge of our government, tonight’s Midwinter Ball serves as yet another reminder of the twisted influence coal and gas have over it. Senator Steele-John said, “I will not be going.”

“It is very horrible to see MPs swan about at an event that is blatantly funded by coal and gas.”

“We see where the political elite’s interests lay when juxtaposed with the reality of the climate issue in countries like Pakistan, in places like Lismore.”

This act by Ms. Thorpe, who previously referred to the Queen as a “coloniser” when she took the oath of office as an Australian senator last month, was her most recent.

The 48-year-old, who was dressed fully in black, entered the Senate chamber in Canberra and mockingly repeated the pledge of loyalty to Her Majesty.

She recited: “I sovereign, Lidia Thorpe, do solemnly and honestly swear that I shall be loyal and I hold true allegiance to the queen Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” while raising her right fist in a Black Power salute.

Sue Lines, the Senate president for Labor, instructed the Greens senator, amidst criticism from other senators, “You are expected to say the oath as indicated on the card.” Please say the pledge.

Ms. Thorpe, who has both European and Aboriginal ancestry, said the oath grudgingly.

Another senator was overheard saying, “None of us like it,” in the midst of the uproar.

She was roundly criticised by Australians and swiftly denounced by other politicians.

One criticised her for using a “unthinking and immature approach to bridge the gap” between Caucasian and Indigenous people, comparing her to US Black Power leader Angela Davis.

Ms. Thorpe was criticised on social media for being embarrassing.

However, Ms. Thorpe said in a tweet that Indigenous Australians, who were in Australia before the British came, never submitted to people.

She wrote, “Sovereignty never ceded.”
