Senator John Fetterman has checked into a hospital in Washington, DC, to receive treatment for clinical depression, according to his spokesman, Joe Calvello. Calvello provided an update on Fetterman’s condition, stating that he is doing well and is on a path to recovery. Despite his absence from the Senate, Fetterman’s team is working at full capacity, with a new office opening in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Fetterman’s health issues began with a stroke during the Senate primary campaign in May 2021, followed by hospitalization on February 8th after he felt lightheaded during a Democratic Party retreat. He was later admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment of depression.

Fetterman’s staff and family visit him daily, and his team keeps him updated on Senate business and news. Calvello thanked everyone for their well-wishes and stated that Fetterman’s recovery would be weeks.

Suppose Fetterman is unable to continue serving due to his health problems. In that case, Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will have to appoint a replacement. A special election will be held in 2024 to select a candidate to finish the remainder of Fetterman’s six-year term.
