Secretary of State appoints Nigel Wilkinson MBE as a VisitEngland Advisory Board Member

Nigel Wilkinson MBE has been appointed to the VisitEngland Advisory Board by the Secretary of State for a five-year term.

The appointment will be for a period of five years, beginning on 11 August 2022 and ending on 10 August 2027.

Nigel, a graduate Engineer and Chartered Accountant, has been the Managing Director of Cumbria’s most popular tourist attraction, Windermere Lake Cruises Limited, since 2004.

He is also the managing director of Winander Leisure Limited, a director of Winander Group Holdings Limited, Lakeland Motor Museum Limited, and Yorkshire-based real estate firm Rushbond plc.

From 2007 until 2017, he served as a director of Cumbria Tourism (CT), the county’s Destination Management Organization, and chaired the committee in charge of managing CT’s finances.

Nigel joined the Board of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) in 2017, and he now leads the Visitor Economy Sector Panel and the Finance, Audit, and Resources Committee.

Additionally, Nigel represents the CLEP in the Lake District National Park Partnership. Late in the year 2020, Nigel was named to the Tourism Industry Council, a partnership between the government and the tourism industry that focuses on enhancing the tourism sector in terms of employment, transportation, and deregulation.

In 2021, Nigel was appointed as a Trustee/Director of South Cumbria Rivers Trust, a charity/Trust whose primary mission is to monitor, conserve, protect, and, when necessary, rehabilitate and improve the biodiversity of lakes, rivers, and streams in South Cumbria and adjacent coastal waters for the benefit of the public.

Nigel was awarded Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s Birthday 2022 Honours List for services to tourism and the economy in Cumbria. In July 2022, he was awarded an Honorary Fellow of the University of Cumbria.

Remuneration and Governance Code

This appointment was made in conformity with the Governance Code for Public Appointments of the Cabinet Office. The Commissioner for Public Appointments administers the procedure.

Nigel will get annual remuneration of £3,300. The Government’s Governance Code stipulates that any substantial political action done by an appointment during the previous five years must be disclosed.

This is described as holding office, giving a public address, making a recordable donation, or running for office.
