»Sean McVay stokes departure rumors by instructing Rams assistants to seek employment elsewhere«

Sean McVay’s retirement continues to be a topic of speculation.

ESPN reported on Tuesday that the Super Bowl-winning Rams coach has advised his assistants that they are free to seek employment elsewhere. And his offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, did just that.

Coen, who served as offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky in 2021, will return to the institution in 2023 to continue in the same capacity. Coen’s return to college from the NFL is, at best, a lateral move and, possibly, a step backward.

It is a strong indication that McVay is seriously considering quitting. After the Rams defeated the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, there were whispers that he would join the Amazon broadcast booth. The Post said that he had received a five-year, $100 million offer to do so. It is unknown if he will pursue a career in broadcasting this season, but it is increasingly likely that he will not be on the Rams’ sideline in 2023.

On January 8, 2023, Sean McVay will coach the Rams against the Seahawks.

This season, the Rams concluded with a 5-12 record, the lowest for a defending Super Bowl winner in NFL history. Several important offensive linemen, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, receiver Cooper Kupp, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and defensive tackle Aaron Donald, had their seasons cut short by injuries.

After trading for Stafford, the Rams lost their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which would have been the sixth overall selection. If the Rams don’t regain their health, it might be a lengthy path back to relevance, which could make it easier for McVay to resign.

Sean Payton, who departed the Saints after the 2021 season, was said to be interested in one of the Los Angeles jobs if he decides to leave New Orleans.
