Romania receives two oxygen generation systems from NATO’s Pandemic Response Stockpile


On Monday, September 5, 2022, Romania received two oxygen generating units from the NATO Pandemic Response Stockpile to assist with its response to coronavirus infections and medical evacuation activities in support of Ukraine. The gift was handled by the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC), the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, and Romania in response to a request for assistance from Romania in response to the current pandemic.

Romania, via the EADRCC, was responsible for the shipping of the medical equipment. On behalf of the EADRCC, Romania also facilitated the shipment of further medical equipment to the Republic of Moldova. The oxygen generating equipment were given by Canada and Luxembourg to the Pandemic Response Trust Fund.

The donation was presented to Romania at a ceremony in Brussels, which was attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Raed Arafat, the Permanent Representative of Romania to NATO, Ambassador Dan Neculăescu, the Director of the Operations Division’s Defence Institution and Capacity Building Directorate, Piers Cazalet, and the Head of the EADRCC, Tim Lannan. The oxygen generating equipment will be installed in a mobile hospital in Iasi, Romania, close to the Ukrainian border. The mobile hospital might be used for prospective medical evacuation attempts to aid Ukraine. Romania will get additional help for the installation and operation of the equipment.

The NATO Pandemic Response Trust Fund was formed in 2020 to keep a stockpile of medical equipment and supplies. Through the Pandemic Response Trust Fund, the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre of NATO has given repeated tranches of COVID-19 support to 13 states throughout the repeating pandemic waves.

In addition, the Pandemic Response Trust Fund is providing immediate humanitarian aid to Ukraine and its neighbours in order to better manage the influx of Ukrainian refugees and strengthen the preparedness and resilience of national health systems through the delivery of modern medical equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals.
