Rob Walter, Shukri Conrad named Proteas coaches

Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter have been named as the new head coaches of the Proteas, according to Cricket South Africa (CSA).

Following a protracted hunt by CSA for Mark Boucher’s successor—who resigned following the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia—the pair were finally acquired.

After his team’s 2-1 Test series loss to England, Boucher stated that he would retire and join the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Former West Indies director of cricket Richard Pybus and former Proteas assistant coach Adi Birrel were among candidates for the permanent role, along with Malibongwe Maketa, who served as the Proteas Test team’s interim coach.

However, Maketa was passed over after a poor trip in Australia, when he lost the Test 2-0 and only managed to draw the final Test in Sydney.

Walter will be in control of the shorter versions of the game, the one-day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals, while Conrad will likely be in command of the Test setup.

Conrad will make his pavilion debut in February when the Proteas face the West Indies in a two-match Test series as they attempt to return to winning form.
