Rishi Sunak celebrated Diwali Friday night as Britain’s new Hindu Prime Minister attended a “wonderful” reception at Number 10.
Sharing a photo of the gathering on Twitter, he declared that he will do everything in his power to “create a Britain where our children and grandkids can light their Diyas and look forward with optimism.”
Tuesday, Mr. Sunak became the country’s first British-Asian prime minister after winning his second run for the position.
Groups hailed the move as a “historic moment” that demonstrates the highest office “may be open to individuals of all faiths and ethnicities.”
Mr. Sunak’s victory in the Tory leadership battle was announced during Diwali, a worldwide religious celebration that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

The new prime minister was born in Southampton in 1980 to parents of Punjabi origin. In the 1960s, his Indian-born grandparents emigrated to the United Kingdom from East Africa.
It occurred after Sadiq Khan, the Labour mayor of London, stated that the fact that Mr. Sunak is the country’s first British-Asian prime minister is a “source of pride” for people because it illustrates that individuals who work hard “can achieve practically anything.”
Mr. Khan, a Muslim of Pakistani descent, stated that people must “put aside party politics” at such junctures, as there will be other times to contest Mr. Sunak’s views.
During a visit to the Shree Swaminathan Mandir in Kingsbury, north London, to meet the local community and participate in Diwali and Hindu new year celebrations, he stated that the appointment of the new prime minister demonstrates that Britain not only tolerates but embraces variety.
“I am quite proud. I am a British-Asian who was born and raised in this country,’ he told the PA news agency.

Which other nation can boast a Christian monarch, a Hindu prime minister, and an Islamic mayor?

Mr. Khan stated that there will be an opportunity to contest the Prime Minister’s policies.
On this occasion, he stated, “I celebrate the fact that we have a Hindu Prime Minister.”
“And consider the children, my children, other people’s children, and people of color who will be motivated by the fact that Rishi Sunak is the Prime Minister of our country,” he continued.
