Johannesburg — Rhulani Mokwena is mystified as to why the community has placed questions on Mamelodi Sundowns’ prowess despite their consistent success.
Sundowns have reigned supreme for the past five seasons, attracting the attention of both admirers and detractors in their sixth attempt to win the championship.
As a result of a sluggish start to the season, their detractors believe they are incapable of winning a sixth consecutive championship.
This has surprised Mokwena, given that they are atop the standings with five victories, one draw, and two losses.
Not only that, however. The Brazilians are on track to defend their MTN8 title, as they will meet Orlando Pirates in the semifinals next month.
Sundowns have not been at their best since the beginning of the season, but they have persevered to earn victories – like they did on Saturday night in Hatfield.
Peter Shalulile’s penalty and Siyavuthu Ndlovu’s own goal gave the defending champions a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows.
The Sundowns co-coach told the media in his post-match comments, “I hear a lot of doubts, and I don’t know where they are coming from.”
“If a team like ours is winning, even when we’re not at our best, and we don’t advocate for time, then we’re doing something right” (we are surprised why there are doubts).
“We are certain that we will assemble a fluid team that will play the way we desire. There will come a time when we score more goals than we allow.”
Sundowns could reach their peak if the new players are fully incorporated into the team.
Sipho Mbule made his debut for the club in the midfield against Arrows, while Sifiso Ngobeni made his debut after returning from loan.
Marcello Allende was effective off the bench in his Premiership debut, but he has failed in his previous three starts.
Mokwena indicated that the only way to develop offensive strategies is through nonverbal communication-based telepathy.
