Finally! The first photographs from behind-the-scenes of the Amy Winehouse biopic have been released.
Back to Black is currently in production, years after it was first announced, and fans have eagerly awaited the first look.
Marisa Abela portrays the troubled late singer with her trademark beehive hairstyle, chunky gold hoop earrings, and tattoos.
According to Glamour UK, the biography was unveiled for the first time in 2015. Since then, British film director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who made her feature film debut with the 2015 hit Fifty Shades of Grey, reportedly signed on to spearhead the film.
According to Deadline, the script is written by Matt Greenhalgh and produced by Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Tracey Seaward.
According to the press release, the film will focus on Winehouse’s “vibrant years living in London in the early 2000s and her intense journey to fame,” as reported by Elle.
The release continues, “Back To Black will focus on Amy’s extraordinary brilliance, creativity, and candor, which permeated all of her work. A journey that took her from the craziness and colour of 90’s Camden High Street to global adoration – and back again, Back To Black crashes through the looking glass of celebrity to watch this journey from behind the mirror, to see what Amy saw, to feel what she felt.”
There has been much speculation about who will portray Winehouse and critical figures in her life.
On the film’s IMDB page, Marisa Abela is listed as the actress to play Winehouse, with Ryan O’Doherty as her co-star. He is to play the role of Chris Taylor, Winehouse’s former partner.
The singer reportedly wrote her hit song “Stronger Than Me” about him.
“I wrote [“Stronger Than Me} for a man that I was with at the time, who I wrote a lot of the songs about, and we had already split up a couple of times, and I really didn’t know why we were not supposed to be together,” Winehouse told MTV in 2004.
“And then it just came to me one day how ‘You should be stronger than me!’ I’m the girl, and you’re the boy. You’re seven years older than me, and you should really be someone for me to come to at the end of my day with my problems, not add to my problems at the end of the day. I guess I wrote ‘Stronger Than Me’ when I realized he was a big girl,” she added.
Winehouse’s father is played by British actor Eddie Marsan.
Abela is known for her role in Industry and is also appearing in Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie film with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as per Elle.
