Ramaphosa has granted an interdict against Zuma’s candidacy

In a partial triumph for President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Johannesburg High Court has granted him an interdict against the private prosecution of his predecessor, Jacob Zuma.

Zuma initiated the private prosecution in December, alleging that Ramaphosa and Advocate Billy Downer, the prosecutor in his arms deal trial, had violated provisions of the National Prosecuting Act. This pertains to the publication of Zuma’s medical records.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has been granted an interdict awaiting the outcome of his petition to the High Court in Pretoria to declare the private prosecution bid against him unconstitutional, invalid, and void. Additionally, the president will be absent from court on Thursday, when the motion will be considered.

In addition, Ramaphosa desires for Zuma to pay the application fees.

Previously, the Jacob Zuma Foundation deemed Ramaphosa’s interdict to be an abuse of process.

Mpumelelo Zikalala, a legal expert, disagrees with the manner in which Ramaphosa responded to Zuma, stating that the president should have left the matter to the NPA.

“When it comes to the merits, I believe he will prevail because his defense is clear: ‘I’m the President; I’m not the one who is meant to reprimand disobedient prosecutors; this is not my prerogative…’

Zikalala told SABC News that his only error was making this particular urgent application and just sending it to the former president, without directing instructions to the NPA or compelling them to act in a manner that would allow them to correct their error.
