South Africa’s cricket team has suffered its second-largest innings defeat in history, with New Zealand winning the first test in Christchurch by an innings and 276 runs.
The Proteas were bowled out for 111 in their second innings before midday on day three, trailing the Black Caps by 387 runs in the first innings.
Temba Bavuma led the way with 41 points, while Tim Southee became New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker on home soil. In 17 overs and four deliveries, he took five for 35 runs.
The Black Caps enjoy an unassailable one-nil lead in the two-match series against South Africa, who have never won a test series against them. The second test, which begins on Friday, will also be held in Christchurch.
