Meghan Markle made a lot of headlines when she made her debut on the royal scene wearing a pair of ripped jeans and a white button-up shirt, but not all of them were favorable.
The 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto were attended by Prince Harry’s then-girlfriend, who allegedly wore an outfit “approved” by the palace that included Mother’s “Looker” frayed jeans ($174, originally $248), a white “Husband” shirt ($255) by her friend Misha Nonoo, and Sarah Flint “Natalie” flats ($450).
But the prince believed more could have been done after skeptics and online trolls complained that Markle wasn’t dressed like a royal girlfriend should be.
Regarding the online abuse Markle had been subjected to at the time, he wrote, “A single declaration in defense of Meg would have been enough to make a tremendous difference.”
Harry claimed that “no one” at the palace stood up for the “Suits” actress, despite the fact that Buckingham Palace has never been known to comment on, much less defend, a family member’s choice of clothing.
Harry said the couple focused “on the game and the good cause” rather than “the clicking of cameras” while attending the Invictus Games, which he called “the perfect occasion” for their public debut because Markle was living in Toronto at the time.
The duke claimed that even though they were both “nervous” about going public with their relationship, they had “hidden from the world for too long.”
Other fashion-related revelations in “Spare” include the Duke of Sussex’s wife’s well-known tiara incident prior to the royal wedding, Camilla Parker Bowles’ conversion of his bedroom into her personal dressing area after he moved out, and a “awkward moment” in which Markle requested Middleton’s lip gloss, which may or may not have been the royal’s $28 Clarins Lip Perfector.
