Pope Francis Hospitalized with Respiratory Infection: Vatican Announces

Pope Francis Hospitalized with Respiratory Infection Pope Francis speaks at his general audience in St. Peter’s Square on March 29, 2023.

On March 29, 2023, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis would be hospitalized for several days due to a respiratory infection.

Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni said the Pope had been experiencing breathing difficulties.

He went to Gemelli Hospital for medical tests, which revealed a respiratory infection that would require treatment.

The Vatican clarified that the respiratory infection is not COVID-19-related, and Pope Francis expressed his gratitude for his outpouring of support and prayers.

Bruni had earlier released a statement that the Pope was at the hospital for previously scheduled checkups.

Gemelli Hospital is where Pope Francis underwent surgery for diverticulitis in July 2021, which is a condition that causes inflammation of the intestinal wall.

The Pope disclosed in a January interview that the diverticulitis had returned.

The Pope’s schedule for Thursday and Friday includes two meetings, but it remains to be seen whether he can attend them.
