After viewing an odd video of a five-year-old youngster costumed as the infamous horror movie character Chucky, newsreader Peter Hitchener started laughing out loud live on air.

On Thursday at 6 p.m., the Channel Nine Melbourne presenter made an attempt to read a story that featured a young child in the US state of Alabama standing by the side of a suburban street and sneering at passing automobiles.

Melbourne newsreader Peter Hirchener (right) during Thursday night's 6pm bulletin, could not contain his chuckles as he watched footage of a young boy dressed as Chucky

But the seasoned journalist found it difficult to maintain his cool as he saw footage of a little child costumed as the well-known deadly doll.

The TV host said, “We think it was all in good humour, we certainly hope so.”

“Terrifying wasn’t it, was it?”

I adore when he gets the giggles, tweeted actor and singer Rhonda Birchmore in response to the news coverage.

Since starting to broadcast for Nine News Melbourne in 1998, Hitchener has grown to be a cherished fixture of the network in Victoria.

The 76-year-old temporarily left his position at Nine in March 2021 due to health problems.

When the well-known newscaster stumbled over his words owing to a migraine, producers were worried and quickly switched to a pre-recorded story.

Before the broadcast ended, Nine tweeted that the news icon was doing OK. Peter himself tweeted that he was alright shortly after the broadcast ended at 7 o’clock in the evening.

‘Many thanks for your kind words… Already, I feel better. I truly appreciate your help,” he remarked.

He is now again narrating the new four days a week, Monday through Thursday, with Alicia Loxley filling in on Friday.
