President Joe Biden and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg are urging other major passenger carriers to follow American Airlines in dropping family seating fees.

American Airlines recently updated its customer service plan to seat children under 15 years old adjacent to an accompanying adult at no extra cost, including Basic Economy fares.

President Biden applauded the move, stating that “no one should have to pay extra to be seated with their kids.”

Buttigieg also commended the airline as the first U.S. carrier to commit to putting this guarantee in its customer service plan.

United Airlines also recently changed its policy to allow families to be seated together more easily and free of charge, while Frontier Airlines implemented a similar policy.

Last July, the Transportation Department issued a notice requiring carriers to do everything in their power to ensure that children under 13 years old are seated next to an adult in their party at no extra cost.

Buttigieg stated that the Transportation Department is seeking to require airlines to guarantee families can sit together and plans to publish a family seating dashboard to show which airlines offer this for free.

He emphasized that a parent should be able to sit next to their child without paying extra fees, asking other passengers to swap seats, or facing a last-minute scramble at the gate.
