Oman participates in GCC, Yemen Blue Transformation meeting

DUBAI, 24th February, 2022 – The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, yesterday took part in the GCC countries and Yemen meeting on blue transformation and its contribution to fishing.

According to the Oman News Agency (ONA), the event was hosted in the UN’s Forum during the Food, Agriculture and Livelihood week in Expo 2020 Dubai.

During the meeting, Yaqoub Khalfan Al Busaidi, the Ministry’s Under-Secretary for Fisheries, pointed out that blue transformation is a modern global strategic vision adopted by FAO to sustain healthy food and diverse food water resources.

The vision, said Al Busaidi, also aims to secure the people’s future working in the blue economy.

He added that the strategy contributes to enhancing the effective management of fisheries to ensure their sustainability and the development of food products by modernising food chains, adding value and integrating digital solutions to reach different markets.

Al Busaidinconfirmed that the fisheries sector in Oman witnessed continuous growth over the previous years.

“Fish production in 2020 reached 840,000 tons, comprising a rise of 44.

5 percent compared to 2019,” added ONA, noting that the value of production went up by 19 percent to reach RO 364 million in 2020.
