Residents of a county around 70 miles north of New York City have reported a “unusual odor” and “residue” on their vehicles, according to officials.

Friday, the Orange County Government stated in a Facebook post that a cause has not been found.

“The Orange County, New York Department of Health has received reports of residents detecting a strange stench and observing residue on their vehicles. There is currently insufficient information to pinpoint a cause. “However, Orange County Environmental Health personnel are conducting field investigations,” states the Facebook post.

Around six hours separate the county from East Palestine, Ohio, where a train transporting dangerous chemicals derailed on February 3. The potential of a huge explosion necessitated a controlled release of chemicals in the days following the disaster, according to officials.

According to the Orange County government’s Facebook post, a team from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will investigate the stench and residue.

In addition to investigating the situation, the Orange County Fire Services Hazmat team is inspecting local manufacturing facilities for any leaks or spills.

According to officials, there is no known imminent public health hazard.
