Mother of Jeffrey Dahmer’s Victim Criticizes Evan Peters’ ‘Dahmer’ Golden Globes Win

Evan Peters, who portrayed serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the controversial Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was a huge winner at the 2023 Golden Globes, but not everyone is pleased.

Peters won the award for Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Television Series or Television Film. However, the actor’s praised portrayal in the 2022 series has sparked worry among many who believe the show celebrates the murderer.

Since its premiere, the families of Dahmer’s victims have denounced the series. Now, Shirley Hughes, mother of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes, shared her thoughts on Peters’ victory with TMZ. She stated, “Actors who win roles playing killers keep the obsession alive.”

Hughes described how she feels about the show’s adoption by Hollywood (and global viewers) by stating, “There are a lot of sick individuals in the world. People gaining acting gigs by portraying killers maintains the fixation. This causes ill people to thrive on fame.”

She continued, “It’s unfortunate that individuals can profit from our grief. The victims never received a penny. We experience these feelings daily.”

Hughes then stated that she felt Peters’ acceptance speech should have mentioned the victims’ families. Peters stated on stage at the awards, “I’d like to thank everyone who watched this performance. It was difficult to create and to see, but I genuinely hope that some good came from it.”

Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer killed 17 men. The Wisconsin-based perpetrator mostly targeted BIPOC gay men.

In addition to condemnation from victims’ relatives, the show has been criticized by members of the LGBTQ+ community and others.

One victim’s family member called the show as “retraumatizing” shortly after it became one of Netflix’s most popular English-language programs.
