Mbappé scores five goals, including a hat trick in 12 minutes, as PSG defeats Pays de Cassel 7-0 in the first half

Kylian Mbappé scored five goals, including a hat trick in the first half’s opening 12 minutes, as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Pays de Cassel 7-0 on Monday to set up a round-of-16 encounter against next rival Marseille.

It was Mbappe’s first hat trick since France’s loss to Argentina in the World Cup final on December 18. He has scored 25 goals in 24 games this season and 196 in his career with PSG, four short of Ednardo Cavani’s club record.

“We came here to show this squad respect by competing at our level. This is exactly what we did, and we’re ecstatic,” Mbappé remarked. “It was a terrific opportunity for them as well as for us, as it serves as a reminder that we come from amateur football and that it is vital to maintain this connection. Even if only for a single game.”

Pays de Cassel maintained their defense for nearly 30 minutes when Mbappe breached it and began allowing goals. He scored five goals to become the first PSG player to do so in a competitive match.

Mbappé and Neymar played the whole 90 minutes for PSG, but World Cup champion Lionel Messi was rested for the match against Lens.

Christophe Galtier commented on the conclusion of the game, saying, “Kylian is a goal scorer. Clearly, he is preoccupied with scoring. During the previous calendar year, he scored 56 or more goals. It was crucial that he and Neymar played the entire match.”

Galtier announced that Kylian Mbappé is officially the PSG team’s vice-captain.

Neymar was cautioned for a reckless late tackle in the 26th minute. Mbappé scored on a cross from Nuno Mendes to give PSG the lead in the 29th minute, and Galtier was increasingly frustrated with his underperforming squad.

Before Mbappé scored with a lob and a chipped finish, Neymar scored PSG’s second goal with a skillful effort, causing the fans to erupt in cheers.

Mbappé scored his fourth after a goalie error, before Neymar assisted Carlos Soler in the second half and Mbappé scored from close range. He came close to scoring a hat trick twice, but a late effort was blocked.

Since 1989, when it won its last of ten French Cups, Marseille has lost three times in the final, notably to PSG in 2016.

On February 7-8, Lyon will host Lille in a match between first-division clubs.

On February 14, PSG welcomes Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup.
