Monaheng stumbled upon a remarkable opportunity when he leased a 1060-hectare farm with black soil, perfect for cultivating sunflowers, while searching for land for his livestock.

Today, he supplies 150 tons of sunflowers annually to various companies. Operating as Mora Farming Project, the farm, located in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, engages 12 permanent staff members and 20 casual workers.

Support from the Government and the Journey to Farming

Monaheng’s journey began in 1992 when he developed an interest in livestock farming.

However, limited access to land and financial support hindered his progress.

The transition to democracy in South Africa in 1994 provided an opportunity for Monaheng to realize his dream.

With the introduction of the democratic government, he found it easier to access leased farmland and financial assistance.

Assistance from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development

In 1994, Monaheng approached the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) for support.

Since then, the department has played a crucial role in leasing him farms in different areas for his cattle farming endeavors.

In 2016, Monaheng’s fortunes took a significant turn when DALRRD officially leased him a farm worth R14.8 million for a period of 30 years.

This lease was part of DALRRD’s Agricultural State Land Allocation program, which forms part of the land reform initiative.

Succeeding in Sunflower Production and Mentoring Young Farmers

Monaheng’s success in sunflower farming can be attributed to the quality of his produce, which quickly gained the trust of the market.

Monaheng emphasizes the importance of producing quality goods and not relying on excuses like racism or politics.

Drawing on his years of experience, Monaheng now mentors young farmers in his area.

He believes that farming, though requiring hard work and patience, offers great opportunities for young farmers, especially when they seek support from DALRRD.
