Four Britons have been arrested in Greece on suspicion of cocaine smuggling.

Authorities said they discovered over 300 kg of cocaine hidden in a shipment of bananas from South America.

The haul is estimated to be worth between €10 million and €14 million, or up to £12 million.

The suspects, who were only named as citizens of London and Liverpool, were apprehended in a rented home near Thessaloniki, Greece. They had spent the previous year in Athens.

They are all 38, 45, 48, and 52-year-old men who have yet to be identified.

A fifth British male, believed to be outside the country, was also needed for interrogation, according to police.

According to Greek police, the crime was discovered after an international operation including Italian and US officials.

The moment the suspects were apprehended by police was captured on film.

The drugs were destined for other European countries and Australia when they were seized.

According to the Home Office, the largest cocaine seizure in the UK in seven years was made earlier this year.

Nearly four tonnes of cocaine were discovered in banana boxes, this time in Southampton.

The containers had just arrived in the city’s dock from Colombia, and they were being inspected by the Border Force and the National Crime Agency.

Last month, they discovered more than 3.7 tonnes of cocaine hydrochloride, which is used to make crack cocaine, hidden within a container of 20 banana pallets.

‘This is the largest cocaine seizure in the UK since 2015,’ said Home Secretary Priti Patel. It should serve as a warning to anyone attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country that they will be caught.’
