A 60-year-old South Carolina man has seemingly been hit with a bit of instant karma after he died while digging a hole to hide the body of a woman who authorities believe he killed.

The body of Joseph McKinnon was found in his backyard after officials responded to calls of an “unresponsive male laying in his yard.”

Edgefield County Sheriff Jody Rowland and County Coroner David Burnett confirmed that deputies were immediately sent to the residence and found that McKinnon had died of natural causes.

Nearby, the body of a 65-year-old woman was found wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in a freshly dug hole.

The woman was later identified as Patricia Dent who had reportedly been living with McKinnon. The relationship between the pair is unknown.

A double death

Meanwhile, an autopsy later revealed that McKinnon had died from a heart attack while Dent died from strangulation.

“Evidence gathered at the scene, along with statements from witnesses aided investigators to build a timeline, leading us to believe that Mr McKinnon attacked Ms Dent while inside their home,” the county sheriff and coroner’s statement said according to Business Insider.

“Mr McKinnon then bound her and wrapped her in trash bags before putting her in the previously dug pit. The pit was then partially filled in by Mr McKinnon. While covering the pit, Mr. McKinnon had a cardiac event, causing his death.”
