Irene Cara, the renowned 1980s singer and actress best known for the “Flashdance” and “Fame” soundtrack songs, has passed away. She was 63 years old.

Her publicist sent a statement Saturday morning announcing Cara’s death, stating that she passed away at her Florida home. The representative stated that the cause of death is unclear and will be disclosed when additional information is available.

Rep. Judith Moore’s statement said, “She was a tremendously gifted soul whose legacy will live on forever via her music and filmmaking.”

1980’s “Fame” and 1983’s “Flashdance… What a Feeling” were Cara’s biggest singles. The latter earned her an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance.

Cara’s cause of death is unknown at this time.

She sang the title song and portrayed Coco Hernandez in “Fame,” and the song contributed to the soundtrack’s multiplatinum status.

Following the release of “Fame,” she was nominated for two Grammys: Best Female Pop Vocalist and Best New Artist.

Funeral ceremonies are forthcoming, and a monument for her followers will be organized in the future.
