Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, David Neal, says that he is becoming increasingly frustrated at the Home Office’s delay in releasing his report into small boats crossings

On February 24, 2022, Mr. Neal delivered the report to the Home Secretary.

Almost five months later, it has still not been made public.

My reports will be published by the Home Secretary within eight weeks of being received.

This report was supposed to be released no later than April 25, 2022, per that agreement.

There is significant public interest in the publication of the findings from the inspection, which looked at border security and vulnerabilities at Tug Haven and Western Jet Foil.

I worry that there will be yet another delay during the summer break if it is not presented to Parliament this week.

The examination took place from September 2021 to December 2021, and in January 2022, inspections were made to the now-defunct Tug Haven factory and Western Jet Foil in Dover.

David Neal stated in his testimony before the Home Affairs Select Committee on June 8, 2022, that he anticipated the report’s publication to happen soon.

He continued by saying that only two of the 12 reports he had handed to the Home Secretary since his appointment in March 2021 had been made public within the allotted 8 weeks.

Senior Home Office officials and I spoke, and I don’t believe there is any disagreement on the report’s recommendations or its main points.

I am aware that my foreword’s tone has caused them some angst, and I assume that this is contributing to the delay.

Four suggestions were made in my report, and each one had a deadline.

The aim of independent supervision starts to lose value when a report isn’t published within the prescribed time frame, and continuing to do so compromises my independence.
