On Day 25, the 70 individuals who had taken refuge in a nuclear bunker beneath the Azovstal steelworks on Mariupol’s outskirts were running out of options.

With the complex being bombarded by the Russian troops on a daily basis, supplies of oatmeal, soup, and pasta had grown more scarce.

Anna Zaitsev, 24, who had sought safety with her family there, reduced her meals to once a day. She and her mother Larisa each lost 20 pounds as the days progressed and their situation became more critical. Oleg, her father, lost three stone.

Shortages got so severe that some women began to lose their teeth, and fights erupted over who should receive what.
