Hawks nab three illegal miners in Limpopo this weekend, seized R3.5 million worth of mining equipment

This weekend in Limpopo, Hawks apprehended three illegal miners and seized mining equipment worth an estimated R3.5 million.

On the evening of January 23, 2023, three alleged illegal miners were apprehended after a successful operation to disrupt mining operations.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation is now committed to eradicating illicit mining by undertaking continual disruptive operations in the afflicted regions.

Members of the Limpopo Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation headed the operation. The Pretoria-based National Intervention Unit (NIU) aided the team.

The crew discovered the three suspects engaged in criminal operations while ambushing them.

During the operation, two (2) big excavators, one (1) tipper truck, and a substantial stockpile of chrome valued at over R3.5 million were seized.

On January 25, 2023, the suspects, ages 29, 45, and 47, will appear before the local Magistrate’s Court.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in the Province of Limpopo commended the team for their outstanding performance.

“I appreciate the excellent execution of the operation and its successes. The team must be applauded for tenacity and commitment to fight the scourge of illegal mining,” Major General Govender concluded.
