Griquas scrumhalf makes the Stormers his new home

Griquas scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer is on his way to the Stormers on a full-time basis having just penned a two-year-deal with the Capetonians.

The nuggety Ungerer was on loan for the Stormers during the early stages of the United Rugby Championship (URC).

He will continue to help out on a short-term loan basis, then head back to Kimberley to fulfill his duties with the Griquas before permanently settling in Cape Town in July.

This means he will be available for selection for the Stormers’ final URC fixture away against Scarlets on Saturday, 21 May.

Kick-off is at 18:10 (SA time).

Stormers have made the URC playoffs

The Stormers are current in fourth place in the URC standings and are fighting hard for a top 4 – or higher – finish to guarantee a home quarter-finals and semi-final.

Ungerer started his professional career with the Sharks in 2013 and has had stints with the Southern Kings and Pumas before joining Griquas.

He said he was looking forward to joining the Stormers on a permanent basis.

“It is great to be back and know that I will be settled here for the next two years.

“The team has been playing some incredible rugby and I can’t wait to get involved again,” he said.

Stormers coach John Dobson said his team needs an experienced player like Ungerer at this stage of the season.

“Stefan really impressed when he was here at the start of the season and it is fantastic to have him back in the fold.

“He has shown great variety in his game and can make an impact in any conditions, so we are all looking forward to seeing what he can do once he has settled here,” he said.
