Graham Huynh’s drug arrest might lead to death in Indonesia

An Australian man who attempted to smuggle heroin into Bali while it was concealed in his anutrum may get the death sentence.

52-year-old Graham Huynh, also known as Jeff Welton, was detained on September 6 at Bali’s international airport upon his arrival from Vietnam.

He is suspected of concealing 8.09g of heroin in his anus, which might result in the death sentence under Indonesia’s drug importation rules.

Mr. Welton, who is in possession of both an Australian and a British passport, is also accused of narcotics possession, a crime that carries a potential life sentence.

In the next week, according to police, they will conduct a news conference to discuss the arrest.

According to Mr. Huynh’s attorney Edward Pangkahila, he has been hooked to heroin for more than 15 years.

According to Indonesian legislation, persons who can demonstrate a drug addiction are provided rehabilitation instead of prison time or other penalties.

Mr. Pangkahila said, “As the attorney, we are working on it and maybe he will achieve rehabilitation.”

He uses drugs and has a serious heroin addiction. He truly needs treatment.

We have asked the drug enforcement department to examine the man’s drug abuse.

When in Australia, Jeff Welton, a diving instructor and enthusiastic surfer, resides in Perth but is based in Bali.

Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, who were found guilty of leading the infamous “Bali Nine” heroin traffickers, were killed in Indonesia in 2015.

On a flight leaving Bali’s airport in 2005, the nine Australians were apprehended while attempting to transport 8.3kg of heroin to Australia.

Only Renae Lawrence, one of the remaining seven, was freed from prison, while Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, another, passed away from cancer.
