The government’s billion-dollar investment in mental health services and facilities has reached another significant milestone with the opening of a new, purpose-built mental health and intellectual disability facility in Porirua today.

Manawai, the National Individualized Service Unit (ISU), was established to provide assistance to a small number of individuals with intellectual disabilities who typically also suffer from serious mental health issues.

According to Andrew Little, “this six-unit facility will give people receiving care a better quality of life through more individualised therapeutic programmes in a more private, homey environment.”

“These are individuals who have been acting in ways that potentially pose a significant risk to both themselves and others; as a result, they require long-term care and rehabilitation in a secure setting, and these units will significantly contribute to their progress in rehabilitation.

“Building dependable services takes time, but the success of this project demonstrates that this government takes mental health seriously and that we are making a lot of effort to improve the situation.

Investing in the future of mental health and intellectual disability services in Aotearoa, according to Andrew Little, is made easier with the inauguration of this facility.

Manawai has given consent for the entry of four individuals, while the remaining units are awaiting approval.
