Controversies

In August 2022, Gillian Keegan came under fire for missing the GCSE and A-Level grading debate because she was on vacation. She justified herself by claiming that she wasn’t the minister in charge of GCSE and A-Level exams. Although she had served as the duty minister for the first two weeks of the summer break, she claimed that she had managed to get special clearance to bring her work computer with her so that she could continue working during this time. She also received criticism for flooding Instagram with vacation photos around this time.

When the Fujitsu Post Office contract was up for renewal in May 2021, Baroness Hayter raised the following concern in the House of Lords: “Secondly, there is the major issue of the lack of accountability of those who were deeply implicated in the lies and lack of openness that led to the prosecutions and the delay in dealing with the results. Keegan’s husband is a former CEO of Fujitsu. When Fujitsu told the Post Office that Horizon was OK and when its employees even testified against the sub-postmasters in court, Michael Keegan served as the company’s top executive.

He doesn’t seem to have paid a price, as he now works as a Crown representative at the Cabinet Office, where he is in charge of managing the government’s ties with vendors. Can the Minister reassure the House that Mr. Keegan would have had no part in any such decision given that Fujitsu continues to cooperate with the Post Office and that a £42 million extension to the Horizon contract was agreed upon with the Post Office last month? ”

The defective Post Office IT system, Horizon, which led to erroneous accusations of fraud against subpostmasters, was created by Fujitsu. Prior to becoming CEO, Keegan’s husband served as the head of Fujitsu’s Technology Products Group for the UK and Ireland from 2010 to 2014. He had previously worked for the Royal Mail Group/Post Office Ltd. in a senior IT leadership capacity. The Post Office’s agreement with Fujitsu was extended in April 2022.

However, during the 2022 United Kingdom government crisis, Keegan did not respond to a press enquiry by the Chichester Observer to comment on her decision not to resign. Following the announcement by Boris Johnson that he intends to resign as party leader, Keegan released a statement in which she praised the Prime Minister’s leadership and announced that she would remain a minister in his government.
