In an interview with Hilary Barry on TVNZ’s Seven Sharp, the 43-year-old New Zealander disclosed his sexual orientation, making him the first openly gay former or current All Black.
In 2005, Johnstone played for the All Blacks as well as for teams from New Zealand, France, Russia, and Wales.
Johnstone told Barry, “If I can be the first All Black to come out as gay and remove the pressure and stigma surrounding the issue, it can actually help other people.”
The public will then be aware that there is a spy among the All Blacks. This might be one of the final parts of the puzzle in New Zealand’s sporting history, bringing everyone closure.”
During his playing career, he was unable to reconcile his sexuality with his “idealized conception of an All Black.”
He repressed this aspect of himself “deeper and deeper,” which he described as “living a double life” and “lying”
Today, he is in a relationship with his girlfriend and is “extremely content and at ease with myself.” He thinks that his public coming out will “help a great number of people.”
Through a Twitter message, the All Blacks responded to Robinson’s interview. The club stated, “Much love and support for All Black #1056 Campbell Johnstone for having the courage to share his story and for helping to create a more inclusive game.”
Mark Robinson, the chief executive officer of New Zealand Rugby, also issued a statement of support for Johnston on behalf of the organization.
“I would like to recognize and encourage Campbell for sharing his real tale. Robinson stated that your prowess and visibility will pave the path for others in our game.
Rugby is an inclusive sport and a place where everyone should feel comfortable being themselves. We are aware that some rugby players have not always felt comfortable being themselves. We want to make it obvious that regardless of who you support, rugby has your back,” he continued.
