According to the police, five female employees of a New Jersey mall were found in the shopping center’s parking garage after overdosing on fentanyl.
The incident took place in the lower level of the parking garage at the Shops at Riverside mall in Hackensack around 5:30 p.m. on a Wednesday.
The women were revived with Narcan and CPR and were then taken to a local area hospital for treatment, with the exception of one who refused treatment. Their conditions are unclear.
Fox 5 reported that the women were all between the ages of 29 and 41 and were suspected to have become unresponsive after ingesting fentanyl.
This opioid can be deadly in small amounts and has caused problems in communities across the United States.
Hackensack Police Department Officer in Charge Capt. Michael Antista assured the community that the incident is being thoroughly investigated to find the source of the substance and prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.
Antista also noted that fentanyl is often mixed with other drugs, such as cocaine and heroin, to create a stronger high.
Hackensack Mayor Labrosse stated that the city is working with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in the investigation.
Labrosse added that it is heartbreaking to see the toll that these illicit and dangerous substances take.
