An elderly Arizona rancher accused of shooting a border crosser with an AK-47 has been released on a $1 million bond.

George Alan Kelly, 74, posted bond after the judge changed it from cash to surety, enabling him to put up his ranch in Nogales as collateral.

Prosecutors allege that Kelly used an AK-47 to shoot at several unarmed migrants on his property on 30 January, fatally hitting one of them as he tried to flee.

Gabriel Cuen-Buitimea, 48, had been deported from the US to Mexico several times after being convicted of illegal entry.

Kelly faces a first-degree murder charge and two counts of aggravated assault.

GoFundMe refused to accept campaigns, but Christian fundraising platform GiveSendGo has four active campaigns for Kelly, raising almost $400,000.
