Dead California dog leads to discovering of owner’s bodies after automobile crash

The bodies of a California couple and their dog were discovered hidden in the dense vegetation of a creek bed where a vehicle had wrecked the previous day, according to authorities.

Matthew Chachere and Jennifer Besser were walking their dog, Buddy, on November 21 when they were struck by a 24-year-old vehicle in San Luis Obispo, according to the city’s police.

On Sacramento Drive, the unidentified male driver reportedly collided with the curb, a street sign, and the bridge abutment.

The San Luis Obispo police responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash, but discharged the driver after failing to notice the bodies and deciding he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police have not yet confirmed if the driver concealed the bodies himself.

The following day, the SLOPD received a report that a dead dog had been discovered in the creek bed at Sacramento Drive, where the collision had occurred. Before arranging for the poor animal to be brought to Animal Control, the police attempted to contact the dog’s owners without success.

Police said that later that evening, Chachere and Besser’s family filed a missing persons report for the couple after they failed to appear at a Modesto holiday gathering. Family members submitted photographs of the couple and Buddy, which a SLOPD dispatcher identified as the day’s reported dead animal.

Chachere and Besser’s bodies were discovered “under thick brush” in the densely forested creek bed when the police returned to the crash site and conducted a search there.

SLOPD Chief Rick Scott told the San Luis Obispo Tribune, “We believe the vehicle ran into the victims.”

The Tribune reported that Chachere, 39, and Besser, 36, both worked for E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto. Chachere, who played linebacker for California Polytechnic State University from 2001 to 2005, coached at Stanislaus County’s Davis and Ceres high schools.

Flowers, candles, photographs, and a stuffed animal bearing the inscription “Jennifer, Matt, Buddy, we love and miss you” have been placed at the site where police believe the couple was killed, according to KSBY.

Tuesday, members of Chachere and Besser’s families visited the memorial.

“They had a really loving family. His mother and father were present for all of the games. You can’t help but feel grief for them,” Chachere’s former Cal Poly coach Payam Sadat said. “I can still recall the father’s face, smile, and happiness while seeing his kid play.”

The driver, who is 24 years old, has been interviewed by police as part of their ongoing investigation into the collision. Depending on the findings, criminal charges could be brought against the motorist.
