Authorities in Colombia have reported that the country hosted its first legal trial in the metaverse this month and plans to further experiment with virtual reality.

The hearing, which lasted for two hours, took place in a virtual courtroom where participants, involved in a traffic dispute, appeared as avatars. The magistrate’s avatar dressed in black legal robes.

Colombia is among the earliest countries to experiment with conducting real legal hearings in the metaverse, where immersive virtual reality is used to create lifelike digital spaces with avatars representing each participant.

The case, brought by a regional transport union against the police, will now continue partly in the metaverse, including the verdict, according to Magistrate Maria Quinones Triana.

While many legal trials have been moved to video meetings hosted by Zoom and Google, the use of the metaverse in this way is still rare.
