The College Football Playoff will increase to 12 teams beginning with the 2024-25 season, according to a Tuesday morning announcement.
In the first round, each of the 12 teams will play four games, with the top four seeds receiving a bye. According to the news release, the games will either take place at the home stadium of the top-seeded team or at a neutral location.
Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff, stated in a statement, “We’re excited to be going on.” “When the board enlarged the playoff beginning in 2026 and asked the CFP Management Committee to evaluate the viability of launching the new format earlier, the CFP Management Committee acted swiftly. Fans, alumni, students, and student-athletes will experience greater excitement with an increase in teams and access.

“We appreciate the collaboration of the leaders of the six bowl games and the two prospective national championship game host cities. Everyone recognized that this modification is in the best interest of college football and collaborated to make it a reality.”
Last year, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby stated that the 2024 expansion was “in risk”; nonetheless, it appears that all parties have reached a consensus.
